Eldoret has always been identified with long-distance running, but there is a new sport that is fast taking shape in the city of champions, golf.
This weekend, all roads will lead to the par 71 Eldoret Golf Club which will host the annual Manchester Salver Golf tournament, which is part of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series.
The three-day 54-hole tournament will tee off on Friday and end on Sunday.
The showdown has attracted five lady golfers, among them Kenya's top player Naomi Wafula of Vipingo Ridge, Faith Chemutai of Nandi Bears, Sarah Nyareri of the Karen Golf Club, and the Eldoret Club dup of Esther Chumo and Sylvia Tanui.
Among the notable stars in this year's edition are top amateurs Michael Karanga, 2022 KAGC golfer of the year John Lejirma, and Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga.
Lejirma who is fresh from retaining his Nandi Open Shield title will be aiming at a maiden Manchester Salver glory.
Karanga broke the national record a fortnight ago after winning the Karen Challenge, and he remains a worthy opponent in the weekend's clash.
Nsubuga who came in 10th at the recently concluded Uganda Open will be in action.
One worthy competitor this weekend is Kenneth Serem who is making a comeback after being on the sidelines due to a shoulder injury.
Serem who returned to play last week at the Nandi Bears Club after being out in the cold revealed that he is eyeing a top-four position. The vintage golfer finished sixth in last year's edition.
"I am fully healed and ready to face off with other golfers in search of points. I have been out of play for long and I expect to give my best shot this weekend," he offered amid smiles.
Serem failed to honor the Nandi Shield Open tournament three weeks ago while still in the final stages of injury rehabilitation.
He is however confident that he was fit enough to compete against Kenya's top amateurs ahead of the Magical Kenya Open set for February next year.
Micheal Alunga won the 2022 Manchester Salver Golf Tournament. The scratch golfer from Uganda scored 4-under 140 gross in 36 holes of action.
This year, a new champion will be crowned after the defending champion relocated to the USA.
